      Seeds are dispersed by wind, water and animals. That means various seeds lie dormant beneath almost all soils, waiting for optimal conditions under which to germinate. Turning over soil, clearing away a nice healthy plot of land, and watering frequently is a weedÕs favorite habitat in which to flourish. You may plant a bed of carrots, but along with these seeds, various weed seeds will start growing also. Besides taking up valuable space in your garden, weeds compete with other plants for nutrients water and light. Weeding is an essential process for the garden once the seeds have germinated and are a few inches tall.

 

Tips on Weeding

   *Pull up weeds before they go to seed and self-spread around the     garden.

  *Try to get the whole weed including the root.

   *Younger weeds are easier to pull because they haven't established a    strong root system

  *Wet the ground before weeding and your job will be easier     

   *Use a hoe or 3-pronged cultivator a couple of times a week between rows in the vegetable bed for removing young  weeds as they spring up.

  *Mulch between plants to help prevent weeds  from establishing

**All these ideas are ways to get the weeding process done safely and organically, there is no need to use harmful chemical herbicides.
